Garnett Edgar Grant Funds Three Classes:

In partnership with Christ Lutheran Church in Pacific Beach ("Home of Saints, Sinners, and Surfers"), Juan Carlos Organization received a grant from the Garnett Edgar Bequest that provided funds to conduct three sets of special classes during the summer and fall of 2014.

The "Sit 'n Fit" class at VA Hospital Spinal Court Injury Unit in La Jolla emphasized exercise for wheelchair-bound individuals. Thank you to Kelli Kaliszewski, VA Recreational Therapist and staff member Nancy Bandy

The Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elementary School class was designed for children with disabilities. All classes provided exercise, social interaction, and fun that contributed to the physical and mental health of the participants

Thank you to Andrea M Bazer, MS Adapted Physical Education Specialist San Diego Unified School District; Deanne Rohde, Principal, Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary; Whitney MacDonald, Adapted Physical Education Specialist, San Diego Unified School District; and Marylou Baranowski-Drews, MA, NBCT, for all their time and assistance in making this 4 week summer program available to their students.

The third set of classes targeted less-active beach area seniors. Thank you to Christ Lutheran Church for making available space for these classes.

"Sit n Fit":

With feedback from participants in current classes, questions and suggestions from interested parties, the experience gained this summer with the VA classes, and Lisbeth's many years of working with wheelchair-dependent individuals, it became obvious to JCO that an additional style of class should be offered. This class focuses on providing exercise for individuals that are in a wheelchair, those who have a lower body injury, or simply anyone who needs to exercise from a seated position.

We have decided to call this type class "Sit n Fit". This seated upper-body workout targets all the muscles in the chest, back, shoulders, arms, and the core. Wheelchair users and people with lower body limitations can face particular challenges when it comes to fitness and exercise. But muscle-strengthening exercise, plus regular aerobic exercise -- the kind that raises your heart rate and causes you to break a sweat -- are even more important for those who exercise while seated, because the workout strengthens the respiratory system, warding off illness.

"Sit n Fit" classes are now being offered at these two locations:

Every Wednesday 4:30 pm at (CAF) Challenged Athletes Foundation, 9591 Waples St, San Diego, CA.

The 2nd and 3td Thursday of each month 4:30 pm at (SDISC) San Diego Indoor Sports Club 3030 Front St. San Diego 92103

Save the morning Saturday December 13, 2014: for a Zumbathon® at CAF, more details to come.
